Privacy
What this site keeps, and what it sends where
Last updated: 15 October 2026
In short
- No accounts, no ads, no tracking, no cookies set by this site. (The live ship map from VesselFinder, shown for sea exits, follows its own cookie rules.)
- We count visits with GoatCounter, which uses no cookies and keeps only totals, nothing that identifies you.
- Your Daily Dig scores stay in your own browser. We never receive them.
- To show maps, street names, satellite photos and descriptions, your browser contacts a few outside services, listed below.
- We have no server and no database, so we hold no personal data about you.
Who runs this site
Dig Straight Through is a free, personal, non-commercial project by Arman. For any question about privacy, write to digstraightthrough@gmail.com.
What stays on your device
If you play the Daily Dig, your browser saves your results so you can see your streak and history: the day number, your score, how far off your guess was, and the point you guessed. This is stored with your browser's own storage (called "local storage"), only on that device and in that browser. It is never sent to us or anyone else.
To delete it, clear this site's data in your browser settings. Your history and streak will then start again from zero.
What your browser sends to other services
Like any website that shows maps, this site asks other services for map images and information. When your browser does that, the service receives your internet (IP) address and basic browser information, plus what is listed below. Each service handles that under its own privacy policy.
| Service | When | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Pages (hosting) Privacy policy |
Every visit | The pages and files you open | To deliver this website to you |
| OpenStreetMap Privacy policy |
Whenever a street map is shown | Which map area and zoom level you are looking at, and the page you are on | To draw the street maps |
| Esri (ArcGIS Location Platform) Privacy policy |
When you pick a starting point, type in the search box, switch to satellite view, or play the dig animation | The coordinates of your starting point and of the exit point; the text you type in the search box (from the third letter); which satellite map area you view | To find street names, search for places, and show satellite photos |
| VesselFinder (live ship map) Privacy policy |
After you dig, only when the exit is in a sea or ocean | The coordinates of the exit point and the address of this page. Inside their map, VesselFinder's own cookie and privacy rules apply. | To show live ship positions around the exit (shown with their permission) |
| GoatCounter (visitor counting) Privacy policy |
Every page visit, and when you dig a tunnel, play the Daily Dig or open Share | The page name (never your starting point or any coordinates), the website that sent you here, browser and system type, screen width and language. Your country is worked out from your IP address, which GoatCounter does not store. No cookies are used. | To count visits and see which features people use. GoatCounter keeps only daily and hourly totals, on servers in Finland and Germany, and shares nothing with anyone. |
| Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) Privacy policy |
After you dig, when the facts about the exit are shown | The coordinates of the exit point and the names of the nearest town and country or sea | To show descriptions and photos of places near the exit |
Your location
The site only asks for your location if you press Use my location, and your browser will ask for your permission first. Your position is used inside the page to set the starting point. Like any starting point, it is then sent to Esri to find the street name, and the map around it is loaded from OpenStreetMap, as described above. We never store it.
Sharing
The share picture is made inside your browser; nothing is uploaded by us. A shared link contains your starting point, rounded to about 100 metres, so it never points to an exact house. Names shown for a starting point leave out house numbers for the same reason. If you share through WhatsApp, X or your phone's share menu, that service's own privacy rules apply.
Links to other websites
Some buttons open other websites in a new tab, for example ship-tracking sites (MarineTraffic, VesselFinder), OpenStreetMap or Wikipedia. Nothing is sent to them unless you click. Once you are on their site, their own privacy policy and cookie rules apply.
What we don't do
- No user accounts or sign-in.
- No advertising and no tracking tools. Our visitor count (GoatCounter) keeps only totals: no cookies, no IP addresses, nothing that identifies you.
- No selling or sharing of data. We don't collect any to begin with.
- Fonts and code libraries are served from this site itself, so your browser does not contact Google or code-hosting services when you visit.
Your rights
Because this site stores no personal data on any server, there is nothing about you for us to show, correct or delete. Your Daily Dig scores are under your control in your own browser. For the outside services above, you can contact them through their privacy policies. You can always write to us at digstraightthrough@gmail.com, and you have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
